A. ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP
The HABC sponsors two (2) scholarships at the end of each school year.
The HABC sets aside $1,000.00 for each scholarship.
The scholarships will be awarded to an outstanding female and an outstanding male applicant.
B. APPLICANT CRITERIA
Applicant must be a Hopewell High School senior in good standing with the school and the community, intends to graduate at the end of the current school year, and plans to continue their education at a technical/vocational school, two-year junior/community college, or four-year college.
Applicant must be active in or has participated in a Hopewell High School sport during their senior year as verified by the Athletic Director. These include athletes, trainers, and cheerleaders. (The HABC defines an athlete as an individual who meets NCHSAA and CMS requirements of participation.)
Applicant must have a non-weighted 3.0 GPA or higher.
Applicant or immediate family must be HABC member.
Applicant must complete and turn in a HABC scholarship application by the announced deadline.
HABC reserves the right to revoke the scholarship if applicant fails to adhere to school handbook regulations and athletic code of conduct.
C. SELECTION PROCESS
A HABC scholarship committee will review all applications and select recipients based on their overall contribution to their team and teammates, academics, extracurricular, and community activities. This will be a blind application-the committee will only know the applicant by number.
No parent, guardian, relative, or close personal friend of an applicant may participate in the selection process.
The HABC scholarship committee has the option to interview the applicant.
Byron Gettings was an integral part of the Hopewell High School Community since 2015. He supported students through his work in the Counseling Department and through his support of the Men's Basketball Team. In June of 2024, he sadly passed away too soon. To honor Coach Gettings, the Hopewell Athletic Booster Club and his family have set up a memorial scholarship in his honor.
The $1000 scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior who meets all of the requirements below:
Proof of enrollment into an HBCU. (As an HBCU Graduate, Mr. Gettings advocated for students to not only apply but enroll and become a part of the HBCU Legacy.)
Verifiable participation in at least one sport at Hopewell High School.
A brief writing sample (500 words or less) of your post high school plans and how you plan to apply the scholarship in your future studies.
